James Shears

Member of Red Watch Fire-fighters from St Mary's Fire Station, Southampton and Instructor at the Wessex Judo Club.

World Fire-fighters Judo Champion 2006 & 2008

Husband, Father, Brother, Son, Friend, Hero.

On April 6th 2010 Jim and another Fireman Alan Bannon lost their lives as they and others from Red Watch battled to evacuate 40 residents from a burning 15-storey block of flats in Southampton. They were among 150 fire-fighters who attended the fire on that day.

Jim was a very special person, a 2nd Dan Black Belt and highly skilled Judoka but a gentle man with a big heart and an openness that endeared him to everyone. His friends at the Wessex Judo Club pay tribute to someone they have known since he was 6 years old and who gave everything selflessly at all times. He will be sadly missed but he will never be forgotten.
