History of The Wessex Judo Club

Club Policies

The Wessex Judo Club was formed in 1990 in Poole, Dorset and was initially housed at the Ashdown Sports Centre in Canford Heath.

From its very first year its Judoka started to win competitions across the county, especially the Juniors of the club. These juniors then went on to win competitions at the National level, with several of them representing Great Britain over the years in International competitions.

In due course the club developed a strong Senior contingent, winning numerous National medals and in 2004 Jim Shears, won the World Fire-fighters Judo Championship.

The club has always had a focus on taking young people of both sexes and developing their latent skills, turning them into young athletes who could compete at all levels. The results across the years have placed the Wessex Judo Club in the top spot within the West of England clubs on several occasions and has demonstrated that Judo can be both competitive and fun at the same time.
